Ethics Director

Providence is calling an Ethics Director.
The Ethics Director is responsible for the quality, effectiveness and performance of ethics services in the Western Washington Region, which incorporates the facilities of both Swedish Health Services (“Swedish”) and Providence Health & Services (“Providence”). The Director works closely with the Regional Chief Executive in carrying out strategic initiatives; assists senior leadership and staff in addressing ethical concerns; promotes ethical practice in all Western Washington ministries and facilities; and collaborates with physician leaders to provide ethics education for physicians, residents and medical students. Areas of focus include clinical, organizational and professional ethics with special attention to ethical challenges across the continuum of care. Central to this position and the role of ethics services is to enhance patient care by bringing practical wisdom, integrity, and moral confidence of clinicians to provide the best care possible. The Director performs duties in a manner that reflects the mission, values, and behavioral standards of Providence and Swedish.

The position reports to the Regional Chief Executive and must establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff at all levels of the Western Washington Region, as well as with other Providence and Swedish staff, vendors and agents, and others. The Director is a member of the ethics community of Providence, which includes ethics directors from the other regions and the Providence Center for Health Care Ethics located in Portland, OR.


  • Provide leadership and support to the regional and operational leaders in matters of organizational and clinical ethics.
  • Assist senior leadership and staff in addressing ethical concerns and promote ethical practice in all regional ministries and facilities.
  • Provide and support clinical ethics consultation services within the region.
  • Create and manage an effective ethics education program for clinicians.
