Vice President and Provost

The University of San Diego (USD) is a Roman Catholic institution committed to advancing academic excellence, expanding liberal, professional and scientific knowledge, creating a diverse and inclusive community, and preparing leaders dedicated to ethical conduct and compassionate service. USD invites inquiries, nominations and applications for the position of Provost. The new Vice President and Provost will be the successor to Dr. Julie Sullivan, who served with great distinction for eight years and has been appointed president of St. Thomas University.

USD’s Provost is the chief academic officer as well as the designated second officer of the University, serving in lieu of the President when she is away for a significant period. The new Provost will join a thriving institution, on an extraordinarily beautiful hilltop campus overlooking San Diego and Mission Bay, that enrolls more than 8,100 undergraduate, graduate, and law students, taught by approximately 875 full- and part-time faculty. USD offers more than 60 bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees and is composed of seven academic divisions: the College of Arts and Sciences, Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering, School of Law, School of Leadership and Education Sciences, School of Business Administration, Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science, and Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies. USD’s growth and increased recognition have brought many new opportunities, and the Provost will work in close partnership with the President, a strong team of senior leaders, the Board of Trustees, and the faculty, staff and students to build on that momentum and to achieve even greater success.

The Provost will be a dynamic and visionary leader with a record of accomplishments that earns the respect of the academic community, and a deep engagement in and understanding of the culture and issues of higher education. He or she will be an informed and committed Catholic, able to provide active leadership for the University’s mission. The new Provost will be asked to address leadership challenges and opportunities including implementation of USD’s strategic initiatives (including, strengthening undergraduate research and building a more global university), enhancing USD’s stature and reputation, providing leadership for fundraising, and encouraging leadership development and mentoring at all levels of the University.
