Walter Burkhardt, SJ, who served as CTSA president (1967-1968) and had received the Cardinal Spellman Award in Theology (1962), entered eternal life on February 16, 2008. Well known as theologian and patristic scholar, he taught at Woodstock College, The Catholic University of America, and Georgetown University. He succeeded John Courtney Murray as editor of the journal Theological Studies for 24 years. He served on the International Theological Commission. In 1998 a documentary series "Great Preachers" singled him out as one of the nine outstanding masters of the pulpit. His homilies and writings on
"Preaching the Just Word" markedly influenced the liturgical vitality of the American Catholic Church.
