We are saddened to inform you of the death of Fr. John Farrelly, OSB, a monk of St. Anselm's Abbey and former religion teacher at St. Anselm's Abbey School. Fr. John passed away Thursday, June 2 at the Abbey after an extended illness.
Fr. John taught religion at the Priory School/St. Anselm's Abbey School from 1955 until 1968. Following that, he had a long and distinguished career teaching theology and spirituality at Washington's DeSales School of Theology, among other institutions. He published seven books on the topics of foundational and systematic theology; spirituality; and mysticism. Fr. John also served as the Abbey's vocation director for many years and helped found the Thomas Merton Society of Washington, in which he was actively involved until his death.
Fr. John's body will be received Tuesday, June 7 at 4:00 p.m. at the Abbey Church, followed by Solemn Vespers of the Dead. The wake will continue until approximately 8 p.m.
His Funeral Mass will take place Wednesday, June 8 at 10:30 a.m. in the Abbey Church, followed by interment in the monastic cemetery.
