It is with great sadness we report that Dr. Edward L. Shirley, Professor of Religion and Theological Studies, died Wednesday, August 15. He had a profound impact on our university (St. Edwards) from the day he began teaching in the School of Humanities in 1985. His expertise ranged from Celtic Spirituality and Islamic Mysticism to the Franciscan-Zen dialogue, and he taught an equally broad range of subjects from “Asian Traditions,” “Christian Mysticism”, and “The Chronicles of Narnia.” His scholarship richly informed his teaching, and his excellence in teaching was most recently recognized by his receipt of the 2008-09 Distinguished Teaching Award.
A rosary service will be held on Friday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. at Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Aug. 25, at 3 p.m. in Mabee Ballrooms in the Ragsdale Center.
