Deadline is September 1, 2010
Administrative Team: Michele Saracino (Coordinator), Colleen Griffith, Natalia Imperatori-Lee
Call for Papers:
In 2009, M. Shawn Copeland published The Subversive Power of Love: The Vision of Henriette Delille, analyzing the life of a free woman of color, who founded the Sisters of the Holy Family in the 19th century in New Orleans, and who was recently made Venerable by Benedict XVI. An important implication of Delille’s life story is understanding slavery’s impact on black women’s identity, and the challenges for those committed to questions of human being and flourishing. Shortly after The Subversive Power of Love, Copeland published Enfleshing Freedom: Body, Race, and Being, in which she further develops anthropological questions related to what is at stake theologically and socially in our understanding of race as it relates to embodied being.
In keeping with the convention theme, “All the Saints,” paper proposals engaging Copeland’s contribution to theology might consider many of the important issues related to theological anthropology today, including but not limited to: the construction of the body in hagiography and theology; the construction of race and gender in hagiography and theology; questions of sin and grace in Christian stories; the legacy of slavery in Christian narratives; bodies that matter in Christian memory; questions related to identity and violence; and the norming of embodied being through theology and story.
Proposals should be between 200-500 words and include the author’s name, institution, and contact information. The deadline for submission is September 1, 2010. Notification of acceptance for presentation will be given by September 24, 2010. A maximum of three papers will be selected for the session. Please articulate in the proposal any audio-visual support required. Authors of accepted papers must submit a 100 word précis by October 6. Recall that CTSA policy limits presenters to one speaking role on the convention program. Please send proposals to Michele Saracino, Manhattan College, at michele.saracino@manhattan.edu.
