Call for Papers:
The Catholicity and Mission Topic Session invites proposals that address the 2011 convention theme “All the Saints” by considering the issue of “Mission as a Call and Witness to Holiness.”
More specifically, proposals are invited for sessions that treat Catholic understanding and examples of mission as grounded in a saintly life. Examples of possible questions to explore include (but are not limited to) the following: (1) How is mission rooted in a heroically holy or prophetically committed life? (2) How have the traditional qualifications for a saintly life – martyrdom and asceticism – molded and enhanced Catholic understandings of mission or authentic discipleship? (3) What might constitute saintliness or holiness in contemporary mission? Does saintliness or holiness today only mean martyrdom and asceticism? (4) Where and how does participation in the struggle for social justice figure in the understanding and practice of mission as a call and witness to holiness? (5) How do the lives of great missionary saints, e.g., Francis Xavier, Bartolomé de Las Casas, Cyril and Methodius, and Daniel Comboni or contemporary missionaries being considered for sainthood, e.g., Mother Theresa, shed light on the intersection of mission, holiness, and sainthood? Proposals that interrogate the role of missionary congregations in the propagation of popular devotional practices centered on saints, e.g. Redemptorists and the devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, are also welcome.
Proposals should be between 200-500 words and include the author’s name, institution, and contact information. The deadline for submission is September 1, 2010. Notification of acceptance for presentation will be given by September 24, 2010. A maximum of three papers will be selected for the session. Please articulate in the proposal any audio-visual support required. Authors of accepted papers must submit a 100 word précis by October 6. Recall that CTSA policy limits presenters to one speaking role on the convention program. Please send proposals to Gemma Cruz at gcruz8@depaul.edu.
