Call for Papers:
The Historical Studies Topic Session invites proposals for the 2011 convention, which is devoted to the theme “All the Saints.” There is a wide range of possibilities for proposals that relate to the theme from the Patristic, Medieval, Reformation, and Modern periods such as the cult of the martyrs, the emergence of the sanctoral/liturgical calendar, the development of canonical procedures for beatification and canonization, the invocation of saints in theological argumentation and magisterial teachings, the veneration of saints as powerful intercessors in the medieval period, the shift towards viewing the saints as models of holiness post-Vatican II, and the tenacity of invoking the saints in popular piety.
Given the upcoming beatification of John Henry Newman scheduled for September 19, 2010 in Birmingham, Great Britain, it seems timely that we capitalize on this moment to invite papers which explicitly focus on Newman and the 19th century as well as patristic themes which were so central to his thinking as well as ecumenical studies and ecclesiology.
Historical Studies is allotted two different sessions. Ideally we would like to lump together papers that are thematically connected in order to attract a large contingent to our sessions. We envision two longer papers at one session and perhaps two or three at the other session in order to maximize opportunities for potential papers. The length of longer papers should take about 25 minutes to read aloud whereas the shorter papers in the session with three should be 15-20 minutes in length.
Proposals should be between 200-500 words and include the author’s name, institution, and contact information. The deadline for submission is September 1, 2010. Notification of acceptance for presentation will be given by September 24, 2010. A maximum of three papers will be selected for the session. Please articulate in the proposal any audio-visual support required. Authors of accepted papers must submit a 100 word précis by October 6. Recall that CTSA policy limits presenters to one speaking role on the convention program. Please send proposals to: daniel.doyle@villanova.edu.
